Fasano is a bright and peaceful Medieval village, built after the fall of Egnatia; in order to run away from the repeated raids of plunderers, the inhabitants of Egnatia took refuge in the hinterland and founded small settlements there. After it came under the control of the Knights of Malta, Fasano flourished in 17th century, when the villagers succeeded in defeating the Turks : every year, in June, “Scamiciata” is the traditional folk feast to celebrate the deed. The centre of the village is characterized by picturesque alleys and white limestone houses, arches and small squares. The Mother Church (Chiesa Matrice) is the most important of all; it was built in the late 17th century, in late Renaissance style. There is also the beautiful Purgatory Church (Chiesa del Purgatorio), built in 1699 in Baroque style, which exhibits some interesting artwork. Only one tower which was part of the old defensive walls still remains: it is called “Torrione delle Fogge” and can be seen from Via San Francesco.
