Squillace is located on a hill, in a strategic position overlooking the harbour with the same name. From the 6th to 8th centuries A.D., the inhabitants the Roman colony ”Scolacium “ had to flee because of the Longobard and Saracen invasions. They moved to the the hill where the village is situated today. Squillace is a place rich in history, traditions and culture. In the upper part of the small town you can admire the imposing city walls and the castle, which was initially a Byzantine fortress and later became an Arab, Norman and finally Swabian property.
